Bernadette Halpin Phillips, 57, of Dunmore, died unexpectedly on Tuesday afternoon at Geisinger-CMC, Scranton. She is survived by her husband, George Phillips, with whom she celebrated 35 years of marriage on Monday.

Born in Scranton, our “baby sister” was the eleventh of twelve children born to the late William and Ann Rose Walsh Halpin, and was raised in the Hill Section of Scranton. She was a graduate of Bishop Hannan High School, Class of 1984, and Lackawanna College. Berna worked for the PA S.W.I.F. until retiring and dedicating her time to be a Mom and homemaker for her family.

Berna took immense pride in her children’s accomplishments, had a heart of gold for her loved ones, knew how to comfort a friend, and could strike up a good conversation with anyone she met. Berna had a beautiful voice, with favorite songs including “Tomorrow” from “Annie”, “Dreams” and “These Are the Days”. She loved writing, planting flowers, and summers in their pool with friends and family. Her “Happy Place” was Singer Island, Florida, with their next family trip planned for October.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the first responders, namely the Dunmore PD/FD and EMS personnel, as well as the Geisinger-CMC ER and ICU staff for their care and compassion.

As a multiple organ donor, Berna was honored by friends, family and hospital staff who held an Honor Walk through the hospital, a reverent tribute to Berna’s benevolence, which will help several people live a longer, healthier life.

She is survived by her children, Andrew, Abigail, and Anthony Phillips, all of Dunmore, six sisters, Anne Slifer (Dave), Erwinna, Barbara Lavelle, Dunmore, Mary Swift (Tom), San Francisco, Grace Medallis (Bob), Scranton, Ellen Dailey (Tim), Dunmore, Susan Kelly (Marty), Moscow, three brothers, Tony Halpin (Mary Ellen), Dunmore, Tom Halpin (Kay), Archbald, and Greg Halpin, State College, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her dog and fur baby, Brody, will be lost without her.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Halpin, Jr., a sister, Joan Lotz, brother in law Jim Lotz, nephew, Jeffrey Halpin, and her mother-in-law, Angela Phillips.

The funeral will be conducted on Saturday, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram St., Scranton. Family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 9:00 a.m. until commencement of services. Burial to follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William St., Scranton.
