Eleanor Cummings Rowan, of Scranton, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday at Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Rowan, who died in August 2007 after 53 years of marriage.
Eleanor was born in Peckville, daughter of the late John and Eleanor Mitchell Cummings. She grew up in Blakely, the eldest of six children. Eleanor attended the Lackawanna Business College and worked for IBM in Scranton before her marriage. She later worked for over 30 years in the local offices of the Giant Supermarket chain.
Eleanor served as an officer of the Catholic Junior League and as president of both the Scranton Prep Mothers' Club and the Sant'Andrea Society. After retirement, she and Bob enjoyed Caribbean cruises and wintering in Myrtle Beach. Recently, she volunteered on committees providing grief support and hospitality for St. Peter's Cathedral Parish.
Eleanor is survived by her two children, Robert, Scranton; and Norri McGrath and son-in-law, John McGrath, Haddonfield, N.J.; three grandchildren, Kate, Christopher (Katelyn) and Brian McGrath, all of Philadelphia; a brother, Bruce Cummings and wife, Barbara, Kingston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be especially missed by her most beloved canine companion, her Yorkshire terrier, Heathcliff.
Additionally, Eleanor was preceded in death by her siblings, Marilu, John, David and Donald.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Cathedral, 301 Wyoming Ave., Scranton. Eleanor's family will receive family and friends beginning at 8:30 a.m. and until the commencement of services.
