James Joseph Hosie
22 April, 2024
James “Jimmy” Hosie, 66, of Scranton, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Joseph Emmett and Mary Ann Surgalla Hosie, he was educated in the Scranton Public School System, first at John J. Audubon #42 Elementary School in the Hill Section, and ultimately graduating from Scranton Central High School, Class of 1976.
Soon after his graduation, Jim set off on a gutsy and grand European adventure, finally settling in London where he worked in the trend-setting fashion boutiques of Carnaby Street, and in his leisure time walked in the footsteps of his musical heroes including The Kinks, The Stones, Bowie, Marc Bolan and the other top commanders of the British Invasion.
Known interchangeably as “Jimmy” and “Hose” by his many friends, he eventually returned to this side of the pond where one of his favored talents, photography, landed him a position as photographer/graphic artist with Lackawanna County Government Services. And while a gifted guitarist and singer specializing in the deeply intellectual and decidedly progressive music the likes of John Cale, Pink Floyd and Richard Thompson, he was not above a Glen Campbell pun when asked what he did for a living, replying “I am a lensman for the County.”
His was a life fortified by music, elevated by literature, enriched by poetry and illuminated by the stars, scanning the cosmos as he often did, courtesy of NASA internet links when he wasn’t gleefully deconstructing the latest BBC drama.
Jimmy is survived by his two sisters, Ann Katinsky, and husband Stan, Haddonfield, N.J., and Grace Hosie, Scranton, cousins, Joseph Hosie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Katherine Sullivan, Waltham, Massachusetts, and Maura Miller, Honolulu, Hawaii, and a close family friend, Paul Pappas, Wolverine, Michigan.
The funeral will be conducted on Tuesday, 30 April, 2024 at 9:15 am from the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William Street, Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Avenue, Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 4-6 pm at the funeral home. Interment at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, is private, and at the convenience of the family.
