Madeline T. Flynn

Madeline T. Flynn, 86, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died on Saturday evening at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late William and Madeline Flynn Tarbrake, she was educated in the Scranton public schools and graduated from West Scranton High School, class of 1952.

While raising her growing family, Madeline took great pride in the home she made for them, and they were always her first priority. She went to work for J.C. Penney as a cosmetician for over 20 years, before retirement.

A devout, Catholic woman, she lived the words of St. Francis of Assisi, loving all of God's creatures. She was proud of her Irish heritage, as well as her West Side and Minooka roots.

When it came to family history, Madeline was the go-to, knowing where everybody was from and who belonged to whom. She travelled extensively. Paris, London and Rio de Janeiro, were her favorite destinations, reflecting her appreciation for fashion and sense of beauty. Tennis was her preferred sport, and she most admired the way Roger Federer played the game. Madeline was deeply grateful for and proud of the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the good people they have become.

She is survived by three sons, Martin Flynn and wife, Virginia; Robert Flynn and wife, Donna; and Shaun Flynn, all of Scranton; a daughter, Kelly Farrara and husband, Darryl, also of Scranton; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Kerrigan Flynn; 11 grandchildren, Maura Flynn Tripodi, Matthew and Patrick Flynn, John and Madeline Farrara, Erin Flynn Poplawski, Ryan Flynn, Martin Flynn, Katie Flynn, Bridget Flynn Tilner and Michael Bradshaw Flynn; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Matthew F. Flynn; a brother, William Tarbrake; and sisters, Grace Pancza and Ann Cocker.

The funeral will be conducted on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the Saint Ann Basilica, 1250 St. Ann St., Scranton. The family will receive family and friends at the church for the hour preceding services, beginning at 10 a.m. Social distancing procedures will be in effect and masks are required. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
