Mary Alice Kilcullen
May 30, 2024
Mary Alice Kilcullen, 88, of Roaring Brook Twp. and formerly of Scranton, died on Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Villa after a period of illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, William W. and Alice C. McGee Kilcullen, and siblings Bill, Bob, and Martin.
She is survived by her brother Joseph, eight nieces and one nephew, many grand-nieces and nephews, as well as seven great grand-nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Scranton Central High School, she was known as Kilo in high school and by her classmates at Marywood, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree as a Clothing Major in Home Economics, which she taught for nearly 40 years. A truly loyal daughter, sister and aunt, Mary Alice built her own home in 1978 where she cared for her mother, who lived through 98 years. Mary A’s home became the center of all family activities, especially at the times of the McGee Clan Reunion.
As a professional, Mary earned a Master’s Degree from Penn State and became a mentor to new teachers and enhanced the skills of senior teachers through affiliation with S.F.T., the Scranton Federation of Teachers. She worked as a protégé of the late Robert K. Cavanaugh, co-founder of S.F.T. As the Federation grew, so did the programs that benefited the teachers. One such program was the Education, Research, and Development Program. Mr. Cavanaugh tasked Mary Alice with the development and implementation of the ER&D Program. Some fifty years later, the Program continues to enrich the instructional abilities of Scranton teachers. Mary’s greatest achievements, however, came as mentor to her assorted nieces and nephews, and the civilizing of her younger brother, Joe.
Much loved in life, Mary A. will be sorely missed by surviving family and friends. Though competitive by nature and an expert skier and fan of minor league baseball, she was compassionate and loving, but above all, she was loyal to her personal principles, her family, her friends and the teaching profession, for which she had great respect and enthusiasm.
The funeral will be conducted on Friday, June 7, 2024 with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 am in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton. Burial to follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 4-6 pm at the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William Street, Scranton.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation,1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018, or to the Scranton Federation of Teachers Robert K. Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund, c/o S.F.T., 431 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503
