Mary J. Mullen, 91, of Scranton, died Wednesday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. Her husband, Joseph Mullen, died Sept. 30, 1977.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., daughter of the late Daniel and Jane McGoff O'Connor, she was raised in the Bellevue section of Scranton, was a parishioner of Holy Cross Church and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. She went on to receive her degree in nursing from the Scranton State Hospital's School of Nursing, where she would work as a surgical nurse until her first retirement in 1992. A fierce advocate for her profession, she was the president of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association and led the significant PNA nurses strike in the late 1980s. After her retirement from the Scranton State Hospital, she took a supervisory nursing position for the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Marian Convent, where she worked for the Congregation for another 10 years until her true retirement. Mary stayed active, volunteering for St. Joseph's Center, St. Ann's Basilica and Hospice of the Sacred Heart. Throughout these years, Mary would share her knowledge and love of nursing with many people.
Mary was her own person. Her independent spirit was her strength, and inspiration to all who met her. Even down to her last few days, she was determined to be in her space and independent. There is a lot to be said about that willpower. She enjoyed spending time with everyone she met and genuinely enjoyed a good conversation. Mary touched many lives over her 91 years in unique ways and she will truly be missed.
She is survived by a son, Joseph Mullen and wife, Mary Beth, Laflin; a daughter, Mary Jude Cawley and husband, Thomas, Ashburn, Va.; and six grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, John O'Connor; a sister, Nancy O'Connor; and an infant brother, Daniel O'Connor.
The funeral will be conducted Tuesday, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave., Scranton. The family will receive friends and relatives at the church for the hour preceding services, commencing at 9 a.m. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
