Roland F. Buck, 81, of Scranton, died Monday morning, surrounded by his family at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.
Born in Susquehanna, he was the son of the late Roland E. and Reva Walker Buck. A learned man, he received his diploma from Thompson High School, earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Bloomsburg State Teachers College and a master's degree in educational administration from Syracuse University. Roland was a longtime educator. His first teaching job was at Friendship Elementary School in the Southern School District, York County, Pa. He then moved to Hamilton, N.Y., where he taught elementary school in the Hamilton Central School District. In Denver, Pa., he taught elementary school before becoming principal of Reamstown and Adamstown elementary schools in Cocalico School District.
Roland was active in many professional and civic organizations including the Choral Society of Northeast Pa., Elm Park United Methodist Church and the Elm Park UMC Choir. He enjoyed bird watching and gardening, and especially loved singing and music. He adored his children and granddaughters, and relished the relationships he developed with relatives, colleagues and many friends.
Roland is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Duggan and husband, Declan, Philadelphia; and Kelin Root and husband, Todd, Lancaster; a brother, Robert Buck and wife, Lillian, Starrucca; three sisters, Helen Stone and husband, Bob, Pittman, N.J.; Ruth Swanson and husband, Ray Stone, Hallstead; and Alice Rhone and husband, Kirk, Starrucca; two grandchildren, Lauren and Maggie Root; and former wife, Katherine Buck, Denver, Pa.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Walker.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Elm Park United Methodist Church, 712 Linden St., Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 1 until the commencement of services. Interment, private at the convenience of the family.
