Rose Mary Blomberg

d. March 14, 2018

Rose Mary Blomberg, 99, of Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon at Holy Family Residence, with her family surrounding her. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Blomberg, in 1943.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late William and Mary Flynn Conway, she was a graduate of St. Paul's High School, class of 1937, and received her degree as a registered nurse from St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City in 1940. Rose Mary's enlistment in the United States Army in 1942 would mark the beginning of a lifetime commitment of providing medical care to soldiers, veterans, students and the elderly. For over 35 years, she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, before a decade serving as school nurse at many local Catholic schools. All this while and thereafter, Rose Mary volunteered for over 25 years at Holy Family Residence and for over 10 years at Mercy Hospice, and was actively involved as the oldest and founding member of AJJ, an associated lay organization that supports the mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Blessed with the Irish wit, sense of humor and an infectious laugh, she loved the beach, a good book and would read the newspaper cover to cover, daily. She was also quite prayerful, her rosary perpetually in hand.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the sisters and staff at Holly Family Residence for their extraordinarily kind and compassionate care of Rose Mary.

Rose Mary is survived by a daughter, Liz Haggerty and husband, Tom, Scranton; three grandchildren, Katie Haggerty, Malvern, Timothy Haggerty and wife, Meghan, Holmdel, N.J.; and Molly Scocozzo and husband, Vito, Scranton; three great-grandchildren, Vito Scocozzo IV and Catherine and Timmy Haggerty; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her five sisters, Margaret Carroll, Ann Conway, Jane Conway, Beth Conway and Ellen Meade.

The funeral will be conducted Monday, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Friends and relatives may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, and Monday at the church, from 9 a.m. until the commencement of services. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 715 Linden St., Scranton.
