William J. McKenna
April 4, 2025
William J. McKenna, 67, of North Scranton, died of pancreatic cancer Friday afternoon at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jane Demmer McKenna.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Philip and Rita Cafferty McKenna, Bill was a 1975 graduate of Scranton Central High School. He was a truck driver for the sewer division of Pennsylvania American Water, where he was a former union steward. Prior to that, he was a long-time dock foreman for Mariotti Building Products, Old Forge.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence.
"Wild Bill" worked hard and played hard. He could build or repair just about anything, and did so for a time as the proprietor of Munster Construction. He was a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. And he was known far and wide for the sparkling condition of his meticulously maintained Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Bill was fiercely loyal to his family and friends, and he deeply appreciated their equally loyal support during his struggle against cancer.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his son Cullen and partner, Danielle Sedawie, Scranton; and daughter Kalee and her husband Zach Stankowski, and grandaughter Ellyn, Flowery Branch, GA.; brother Patrick and his wife Kathleen, Clarks Green; sister-in-law Mary McKenna, Chandler, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Paul and Philip Jr., preceded him in death.
The family extends special thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, for their extraordinary care, compassion and kindness.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday, April 10, 2025, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Holy Rosary Church at Mary, Mother of God Parish, 320 William Street, Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 9:00am until the commencement of services. Interment, with full military honors, to follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
Arrangements are entrusted to Edward Knight O'Donnell Funeral Home, LLC, 323 William Street, Scranton.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 30 E.D. Preate Drive, Suite 108, Moosic, PA 18507
